All you have left to do is make the cell's height bigger by the same value as your desired verticalPadding, and then modify your inner layout so that any views that had spacing to the edges of the cell have that same spacing increased by verticalPadding/2. Minor downside: you get verticalPadding/2 padding on both the top and bottom of the tableView, but you can quickly fix this by setting tableView.contentInset.bottom = -verticalPadding/2 and tableView.contentInset.top = -verticalPadding/2.
